The capital is planning a pilot deployment of hydrogen fuel cell buses through a partnership involving the city transport operator and public sector energy agencies, reflecting a broader push towards low-emission mobility systems across large metropolitan centres.

Officials familiar with the proposal said two Hydrogen Bus units are expected to be introduced under a trial framework aimed at assessing operational viability, fuel efficiency and long-term scalability within Delhi’s public transport network. The initiative comes as Indian cities face increasing pressure to reduce transport-related pollution while improving the reliability of mass transit infrastructure for growing populations. The proposed buses are expected to operate under a gross cost contract model, where operational responsibilities remain with the public transport authority while technology and associated investments are supported through institutional partnerships. Policy planners believe such financial structures may become necessary as cities experiment with emerging clean mobility technologies that currently involve higher deployment costs than conventional diesel fleets. Hydrogen fuel cell systems generate electricity through a chemical process using hydrogen and oxygen, producing water vapour instead of tailpipe emissions.

Transport experts say the technology could offer advantages for heavy-duty urban routes and high-frequency operations where charging time limitations continue to affect battery-electric mobility systems. Delhi has already expanded its electric bus network over recent years as part of wider efforts to improve air quality and reduce fossil fuel dependency. However, mobility specialists argue that multiple clean-energy technologies may be required to support the scale and complexity of transport demand across the National Capital Region. In this context, Hydrogen Bus technology is increasingly being explored as a complementary option for longer routes and intensive operational cycles. Urban planners also point out that the success of hydrogen mobility will depend on parallel investments in refuelling infrastructure, storage systems and green hydrogen production capacity. While India has announced ambitious clean hydrogen targets at the national level, transport applications remain at a relatively early stage, with limited operational pilots currently underway.

The environmental implications remain significant for Delhi, where vehicular emissions continue to contribute heavily to declining air quality levels, especially during winter months. Public health researchers have repeatedly linked transport pollution with respiratory illness, reduced productivity and rising urban healthcare burdens. Industry observers believe the pilot programme will primarily help policymakers evaluate real-world operating costs and infrastructure requirements before considering wider deployment across the city’s transport network. Future decisions are likely to depend on fuel economics, passenger capacity performance and the availability of clean hydrogen supply chains. For commuters, the immediate impact may be limited during the testing phase, but the project signals a longer-term transition in how Delhi is approaching sustainable urban mobility.
