Hyderabad Srisailam Reservoir Holds Steady as Inflows Ease

Water inflows into the Srisailam reservoir have moderated after earlier heavy flows, while storage has continued to rise during the monsoon. The reservoir was receiving about 36,233 cusecs from Jurala on Sunday, with authorities balancing storage levels, hydropower generation and downstream releases towards Nagarjuna Sagar.

Srisailam’s water level stood at 878.20 feet, against a full reservoir level of 885 feet. Storage was reported at about 178 TMC, compared with the project’s full capacity of 215 TMC. The latest inflow figures indicate a decline from the stronger flood flows recorded earlier. However, the reservoir remains well supplied, giving operators greater flexibility in managing water movement through the Krishna river system. Authorities were releasing around 38,369 cusecs downstream towards Nagarjuna Sagar while continuing power generation at the project. Such releases form part of the operational balancing required when reservoir storage rises during periods of strong monsoon inflows.

The difference between inflows and releases will remain important in the coming days. If upstream rainfall weakens, inflows could fall further, while continued rain across the Krishna basin could quickly reverse the trend. Reservoir management therefore depends on regular monitoring of rainfall, river flows and storage across connected projects. The present storage position also has implications beyond reservoir operations. Srisailam is an important component of the wider Krishna basin system, supporting irrigation, drinking-water requirements and hydropower generation across the region. Changes in its storage and release patterns can influence water availability downstream, particularly at Nagarjuna Sagar.

For Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the monsoon period also brings the need for careful coordination over shared river resources. Maintaining transparent water accounting and predictable reservoir operations becomes increasingly important when inflows fluctuate rapidly. The current levels provide some operational cushion, but the reservoir remains below its maximum storage. Further rainfall in upstream catchments could push inflows higher, while a prolonged reduction could change the release strategy. With the monsoon still active, the immediate focus will remain on how quickly inflows change and whether downstream releases can be maintained without placing unnecessary pressure on available storage. Effective reservoir management will be critical to balancing flood moderation, power generation and water security through the remainder of the season.
