HYDERABAD: A key road link connecting Kondapur and Hafeezpet will remain inaccessible to motorists for nearly three weeks from July 16 as civic authorities begin infrastructure works aimed at improving drainage and expanding capacity beneath a busy railway corridor. The temporary closure is expected to disrupt daily commuting patterns but is also being viewed as part of a broader effort to strengthen Hyderabad’s resilience against recurring monsoon-related urban flooding.
The railway underpass at Vaishali Nagar has long been identified as one of the area’s most vulnerable transport bottlenecks during heavy rainfall. Its limited width, coupled with inadequate stormwater evacuation, has frequently resulted in water accumulation, traffic delays and reduced emergency accessibility. Civic engineers have now scheduled road widening alongside the construction of an upgraded stormwater drainage network designed to improve water flow and reduce flood-related disruptions. Traffic authorities have introduced a series of temporary diversions covering multiple residential and commercial neighbourhoods, including routes connecting My Home Mangala, Hafeezpet, Kondapur, Allwyn Junction, RTC Colony, Raghavendra Nagar Colony and surrounding areas. Motorists travelling through the affected corridor have been advised to rely on nearby road-over-bridges, alternate arterial roads and designated U-turn points while construction remains underway. Urban mobility specialists note that while such diversions inevitably increase travel times in the short term, they are often necessary where ageing transport infrastructure intersects with rapidly expanding residential development. Hyderabad’s western growth corridor has witnessed sustained real estate and commercial expansion over the past decade, placing increasing pressure on legacy road networks that were not originally designed for present traffic volumes or increasingly intense rainfall events linked to changing climate patterns.
