Hyderabad: Telangana has initiated a long-term strategy to strengthen Hyderabad’s drinking water network by integrating multiple supply sources and preparing a comprehensive water master plan for the city’s expanding urban footprint. The move aims to improve supply reliability, address growing demand and build resilience against future climate-related water stress.
During a review of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), the Chief Minister directed officials to interconnect all major drinking water sources serving the city. The objective is to ensure that if one source is disrupted due to technical issues, maintenance or climatic conditions, water can be diverted seamlessly from alternative sources without affecting consumers. The government has also asked officials to prepare a long-term plan to meet the drinking water requirements of Hyderabad’s Comprehensive Urban Renewal and Expansion (CURE) area over the next five decades. The proposed strategy is expected to cover the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits, surrounding municipalities and recently merged urban areas, reflecting the city’s continued outward expansion. Urban infrastructure experts say Hyderabad water supply planning is becoming increasingly important as rapid population growth, urbanisation and changing climate patterns place greater pressure on existing resources. Building interconnected supply systems can reduce dependence on individual reservoirs while improving operational flexibility during emergencies.
The review also focused on improving service equity across the metropolitan region. Officials have been directed to prioritise neighbourhoods that currently receive drinking water only once every three or four days, with the aim of increasing supply frequency to alternate days. Water policy specialists note that consistent distribution remains a key challenge in rapidly growing cities where infrastructure expansion often struggles to keep pace with urban development. Alongside drinking water projects, the government has accelerated work on sewage treatment infrastructure. Authorities have been instructed to complete ongoing water supply and sewage treatment projects within defined timelines while resolving legal and administrative hurdles that have delayed implementation. Expanding treatment capacity is expected to support both environmental protection and sustainable water resource management. The renewed focus on Hyderabad water supply also reflects growing concerns over climate variability. Officials highlighted the need to strengthen preparedness for dry weather conditions associated with recurring climate phenomena that can reduce reservoir inflows and increase demand for reliable urban water services.
As Hyderabad continues to evolve into one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions, experts believe integrated water planning, modern treatment infrastructure and equitable distribution systems will be central to ensuring long-term urban resilience.
