Hyderabad Metro Phase-II Gets Government Approval For Major Expansion
Hyderabad’s public transport network is set for a major expansion after the Telangana government granted administrative sanction for Phase-II of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. The new phase is expected to strengthen urban mobility, improve connectivity across emerging growth corridors and support the city’s long-term transportation needs.
The project will be implemented as a joint venture between the Telangana government and the Centre on a 50:50 funding basis. The approved Phase-II network will add approximately 76.4 kilometres of new metro infrastructure, significantly expanding Hyderabad’s existing rapid transit system. Officials estimate the project cost at ₹24,269 crore. The expansion is aimed at improving access to major residential, commercial, industrial and transportation hubs while reducing dependence on private vehicles and easing road congestion across the city.
The sanctioned corridors include the Raidurg–RGI Airport route, BHEL–Lakdikapul corridor, Patny–Kandlakoya stretch, Miyapur–Isnapur extension and the LB Nagar–Hayathnagar corridor. Together, these routes are expected to connect several high-growth areas that currently rely heavily on road-based transportation. Urban mobility experts note that metro rail systems play a crucial role in supporting sustainable urban development. Expanded metro networks can improve travel reliability, reduce commuting times, lower traffic congestion and help curb transport-related emissions in rapidly growing metropolitan regions.
The airport corridor is expected to become one of the most strategically important components of the project by providing direct metro connectivity between Hyderabad’s IT hub and the city’s international airport. Other corridors will improve access to expanding residential suburbs and industrial clusters located on the city’s periphery. Infrastructure planners also highlight the broader economic benefits of metro expansion. Improved transit connectivity often stimulates commercial development, increases real estate activity and supports transit-oriented growth around station areas. As Hyderabad continues to expand beyond its traditional urban core, the Metro Phase-II project represents a significant step toward building a more integrated, efficient and future-ready public transportation system capable of supporting the city’s growing population and economic ambitions.
