Hyderabad Moves Towards Smarter AI-Powered Traffic Management
Hyderabad is set to strengthen its traffic management and road safety systems with greater use of artificial intelligence and integrated traffic data. Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to reduce congestion and prevent road accidents across the city and along the Outer Ring Road.
Jaju reviewed traffic management and road safety measures with senior officials at the Telangana Secretariat following directions from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. The meeting focused on improving traffic signals, identifying accident-prone locations and creating faster routes for emergency services. Officials were asked to strengthen signalling systems across Hyderabad, district headquarters, municipalities and urban areas. Authorities have also been directed to prepare the Detailed Project Report at the earliest. November and December have been set as deadlines for installing traffic signals at locations where they are required. Currently, 429 traffic signalling systems operate within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits. Officials said advanced signal control systems are already being used at these locations.
A key proposal discussed during the meeting was the creation of an Integrated Traffic Data Platform. The system could bring traffic information from different locations onto a common platform, allowing authorities to analyse movement patterns and respond more effectively. Jaju also suggested establishing a dedicated TG-TMARS (Traffic Management and Road Safety) system to coordinate traffic management and road safety efforts. The government plans to modernise traffic signals, strengthen electronic enforcement and implement road safety measures in line with Supreme Court guidelines. Officials were also asked to take strict action against footpath encroachments that affect pedestrian movement and road safety. Artificial intelligence is expected to play a larger role in the next phase of Hyderabad’s traffic management. Officials have been directed to study emerging AI-based technologies that can improve traffic flow, identify risks and make journeys safer and more convenient.
Rather than limiting AI applications to detecting traffic violations, the proposed approach could use technology for broader traffic monitoring and road safety planning. Pilot projects will be conducted at suitable locations to assess the effectiveness of new technologies. Successful initiatives could then be expanded across Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana. The planned shift towards integrated data, smarter signals and AI-based solutions reflects Hyderabad’s growing need for technology-driven traffic management as vehicle numbers and urban activity continue to increase.
