Hyderabad’s Mir Alam Tank to Get World-Class Tourist Facilities
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy conducted a surprise inspection of ongoing development works at Mir Alam Tank in Hyderabad, reviewing plans to transform the historic water body into a major tourism destination.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister reviewed development plans and directed officials to introduce distinctive designs and tourist-friendly facilities. He also examined the construction of the suspension bridge being developed across the tank. The proposed bridge is a major component of the infrastructure project. With an estimated cost of Rs 430 crore, the 2.65-km-long and 22.2-metre-wide bridge is targeted for completion by late 2027. It will connect Shastripuram with Chintalmet Road and is expected to improve connectivity in southern Hyderabad. Revanth Reddy instructed officials to complete the development works within the stipulated timeline while ensuring that sewage does not enter the tank. He also directed authorities to widen the canal to enable smoother floodwater flow towards the Musi River.
The government is also exploring water sports and other recreational activities around the tank. Officials have been asked to develop the islands within Mir Alam Tank attractively and create facilities that can increase tourist interest. The Chief Minister highlighted the tank’s proximity to Hyderabad’s international airport and called for a distinctive tourism experience supported by improved infrastructure and environmental management. Plans also include beautification of three island-like areas within the tank. The Chief Minister has suggested developing them along the lines of Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, including features such as a bird habitat and waterfalls. The project is significant not only for tourism but also for the broader development of Hyderabad’s southern areas. Better connectivity, recreational spaces and improved water management could strengthen the area’s urban appeal.
At the same time, the focus on preventing sewage inflow and improving floodwater movement highlights the need to combine tourism infrastructure with protection of the tank’s ecological health. Senior officials from the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and municipal authorities participated in the inspection. Once completed, the bridge and associated tourism facilities could give Mir Alam Tank a new identity as an important leisure, connectivity and tourism destination in Hyderabad.
