Hyderabad: An artificial intelligence-based traffic monitoring system developed by the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is helping Telangana Police strengthen road safety by transforming routine patrol vehicles into mobile traffic enforcement units. The technology uses AI-enabled dashcams to detect traffic violations in real time, offering a scalable alternative to fixed surveillance infrastructure.
The Hyderabad AI traffic enforcement system, known as VIOLA, combines low-cost dashboard cameras with artificial intelligence to identify offences such as riding without helmets, triple riding and wrong-side driving. The platform integrates with Telangana Police’s existing e-Challan system, where officers verify AI-generated violations before penalties are issued, ensuring human oversight remains part of the enforcement process. Unlike conventional CCTV networks that monitor fixed junctions, the AI-powered dashcams allow patrol vehicles to capture violations across wider road networks. This mobile approach increases enforcement coverage without requiring additional roadside infrastructure, making it a cost-effective solution for rapidly growing urban areas. The technology builds on research conducted at IIIT-H and has evolved from academic studies into an operational system capable of supporting day-to-day traffic management. During pilot deployments, the platform demonstrated high verification accuracy, enabling authorities to process traffic violations more efficiently while reducing the burden on frontline personnel.
Experts believe the Hyderabad AI traffic enforcement initiative reflects the growing role of artificial intelligence in improving urban governance.
