Gurugram Basai WTP Expansion Improves Water Security
Gurugram is set to strengthen its urban water infrastructure as a major expansion project at the Basai water treatment plant receives approval from Haryana’s high-powered works committee. The ₹149 crore upgrade aims to increase treatment capacity, improve storage systems, and support the city’s growing demand for reliable drinking water as population and development pressures continue to rise.
The project, planned by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), includes a new 100 million litres per day filtration unit, two large sedimentation and storage tanks, pipeline improvements, and automated monitoring systems. Once completed, the facility’s treatment capacity will rise from 270 MLD to 370 MLD, while storage capacity will increase significantly. The Basai WTP Expansion is being viewed as an important step towards improving water resilience in one of India’s fastest-growing urban regions. Gurugram’s rapid residential, commercial, and industrial growth has placed increasing pressure on existing water networks, making infrastructure upgrades essential for long-term urban stability. Officials involved with the project said construction is expected to begin after completion of required procedural approvals and formalities. The work is expected to take nearly 30 months, with the upgraded system designed to improve operational efficiency and provide greater flexibility during periods of high demand.
At present, Gurugram receives treated water from two major facilities Basai and Chandu Budhera water treatment plants with a combined supply capacity of around 670 MLD. The expansion will increase Basai’s storage capability closer to 2,000 million litres, creating additional reserves for the city’s residents and businesses. Urban planners believe that improving water infrastructure must remain closely linked with sustainable city planning. As Gurugram continues to attract investment and expand its built environment, reliable water management will play a crucial role in ensuring balanced growth without putting excessive pressure on natural resources.
Experts also highlight that large infrastructure projects need to be supported by demand management measures, including efficient water usage, recycling systems, rainwater management, and better monitoring of groundwater resources. Expanding supply alone may not address future challenges unless consumption patterns and resource conservation are considered together. The Basai WTP Expansion reflects the wider need for climate-resilient infrastructure in rapidly urbanising regions.
