The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has prepared an estimate of about ₹49 crore to rebuild 13 major roads in Gurugram after poor-quality construction and delays left several corridors with deep potholes, traffic congestion and dust-related problems. The proposal has been sent for approval from GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena, after which tenders will be issued.
The roads included in the plan are in Sector 23-23A, Sector 18-19, and along the routes from Mahavir Chowk to Atul Kataria Chowk and between Krishna Chowk and Rezangla Chowk. The list also covers the divided road in Sector 15 Part One and Two, New Railway Road, Old Railway Road, Civil Lines Road, Sector 9-9A Road, Sector 5-6 Road, Sector 22-23 Road, Sector 7-8 Road and Sector 21-22 Road.
According to the report, between 50,000 and 70,000 vehicles use these roads every day. The existing potholes have increased the risk of accidents and contributed to traffic jams on the affected corridors. Dust is also being thrown up by vehicles travelling over damaged surfaces.
GMDA Executive Engineer Amit Godara prepared the estimate and forwarded it to senior officials for approval. GMDA Chief Engineer Praveen Chaudhary said the 13 main roads would be rebuilt. He added that potholes formed after the rains were being repaired in the meantime.
The proposed reconstruction follows the failure of an earlier contract covering eight of the 13 roads. GMDA had awarded that contract to a contractor in December 2024 for approximately ₹22 crore. The company completed work on some roads, but the surfaces developed deep potholes after the first rains of the previous year, according to the report.
GMDA cancelled the contract after the work was not completed within the stipulated period and imposed a penalty of about ₹6 crore. The contractor was also blacklisted following departmental action over construction deficiencies and delays.
Repair work is already under way on roads where potholes have appeared. A tender has been awarded for repairing roads from Sector 1 to Sector 23, while the wider reconstruction plan awaits approval from the GMDA chief executive before fresh tenders can be released.
