A certificate distribution programme for house regularisation under GO 118 was disrupted by arguments and sloganeering between Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Congress workers at Saroornagar Indoor Stadium, even as the Telangana government outlined the next phase of measures linked to the 22-A issue.
BRS MLA from LB Nagar D. Sudheer Reddy, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and other leaders attended the programme on Saturday, where beneficiaries from colonies in the constituency received house regularisation certificates.
Tension emerged before the programme began after BRS workers objected to being denied permission to go on stage. They alleged that Congress leaders without protocol had been allowed on stage and demanded similar access. The police did not permit the BRS workers to join the stage.
Sudheer Reddy objected to the police action and indicated that he wanted to leave the venue. He alleged that the police had earlier stopped him from proceeding to the programme and criticised what he described as overzealous restrictions.
The dispute continued during the event. While Sudheer Reddy was addressing the gathering, some Congress workers, described in the report as supporters of Congress leader Madhu Yaskhi Goud, raised slogans from the stage. The MLA appealed to them to stop and warned that their actions could provoke a response from BRS workers.
“This is not good on your part. Don’t instigate BRS workers to reciprocate. Mend your ways,” Sudheer Reddy said. He also asked Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy to take note of the conduct of the Congress workers.
The confrontation took place against the backdrop of the government’s efforts to implement measures concerning the 22-A issue. Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the government was focusing on 12 points announced in the Assembly and was fulfilling the related promises in phases.
According to the minister, colony-related issues were being addressed under GO 118, while regularisation of house sites in the Singareni region was being taken up under GO 76. The Saroornagar programme involved the distribution of certificates to residents of different LB Nagar colonies under the GO 118 process.
The event highlighted how the delivery of land and house regularisation benefits can become intertwined with political protocol and access disputes at public programmes.
