Hyderabad faced waterlogging and disrupted traffic movement after heavy showers lashed several parts of the city on Saturday, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that more rain, thunderstorms and lightning are likely across Telangana through September 25.
Rain was reported from Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Tolichowli, Shaikpet, Golconda, Khairatabad, Himayatnagar, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills and adjoining areas. The showers began in the afternoon and continued intermittently into the evening, with several locations receiving intense spells before the rain eased later in the day.
Waterlogging was reported at multiple points, affecting traffic movement on some stretches. The latest conditions underline the immediate effect of short-duration heavy rainfall on Hyderabad’s road network, particularly where drainage capacity and traffic movement are already sensitive to intense spells.
According to the IMD’s latest warning bulletin issued on Saturday, heavy rain is likely to continue in parts of Telangana through September 25. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely during the initial days of the forecast period.
The weather activity is linked to an upper-air cyclonic circulation that has moved into the north Andaman Sea and adjoining areas. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the region and move west-northwestwards towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast. The system is expected to intensify gradually over the next three to four days, the IMD said.
A north-south trough extending from north Coastal Andhra Pradesh towards the Gulf of Mannar is also contributing to the weather activity over Telangana and neighbouring areas.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for isolated heavy rain in 13 districts: Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar and Nagarkurnool.
Hyderabad recorded 8 mm of rainfall on Saturday. The city’s maximum temperature was 32.9°C, while the minimum temperature was 24.1°C.
The weather office has forecast light to moderate rain at many places across Telangana on Sunday and Monday, with further spells possible in the following days. Residents in the city and the districts under the yellow warning are likely to see changing conditions as the weather system moves towards the eastern coast.
