DUSU election results 2026 counting is underway at Delhi University under heavy security, with the NSUI leading the presidential race after four rounds and Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen ahead for vice-president. More than 20 counting rounds are expected before the final results are declared.
NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena was leading the presidential contest, followed by ABVP candidate Yash Dabas, according to the latest counting position reported by The Indian Express. The ABVP was ahead for secretary and joint secretary, with NSUI candidates in second place in both races.
Shokeen, who entered the vice-president contest as an Independent after not receiving an NSUI ticket, was leading the race, followed by the ABVP candidate. The Left alliance of AISA and SFI was trailing in all four posts at the time of the report.
Police have deployed personnel at the counting centre and other points considered vulnerable to crowding as candidates, supporters and students gather during the counting process. Madhur Verma, Joint Commissioner of Police, Central range, said pickets and barricades had been placed at college gates and other strategic locations to regulate movement and prevent unauthorised entry.
Foot patrols, motorcycle units and PCR vans have also been deployed across the campus, Verma said. Delhi Police is coordinating with Delhi University authorities and college administrations to manage entry and exit, monitor crowds and respond to incidents during counting and the declaration of results.
Traffic restrictions have been imposed on stretches including Chhatra Marg, Probyn Road and University Road. The measures affect movement around the university campus while the counting centre remains the focus of security arrangements.
The election recorded a turnout of 40.46% on Friday among eligible students, higher than the 29.7% recorded in 2024 and the 39.45% turnout in 2025. The increase comes as the election has been shaped by concerns extending beyond student politics, including accommodation, women’s safety and campus infrastructure.
Student housing has gained particular prominence after a building housing a private hostel at Satya Niketan, a hub of private accommodation for students from Delhi University’s South Campus colleges, collapsed on September 6. Five students were killed in the incident. Housing conditions and women’s safety were among the issues raised by candidates in their manifestoes.
Campaigning also played out through Instagram reels, music videos, drone footage and emotional video appeals, alongside conventional campus mobilisation. At the Campus Law Centre, caste and regional identities were reported to have influenced voting preferences, with Jat, Gujjar and Yadav groups traditionally viewed as important blocs by party insiders. Candidates from Purvanchal and several Jat candidates were also part of the contest.
Student parties distributed freebies during the campaign, including makeup kits, chocolates and pizzas to hostel students. The counting process will continue through the remaining rounds before Delhi University announces the final results.
