Three separate fraud complaints have been registered in eastern Ahmedabad, including a case in which a 75-year-old woman allegedly lost gold jewellery worth ₹4.40 lakh after unidentified men frightened her with a false claim that police checking was under way ahead. The other complaints involve an alleged ₹5 lakh housing-related fraud in Narol and a ₹1.98 lakh credit-card and banking scam in Vatva.
According to the report, the jewellery incident took place near Nigam Road on October 18. Gauriben Patel, who lives in Mahadev Platinum near Ghodasar Joggers Park, was returning after visiting a temple when three men allegedly stopped her. They told her that strict police checking was taking place ahead and asked her to remove her jewellery and place it in a bag.
The group allegedly tried to build trust by having one accomplice pretend to remove his own chain and put it in his pocket. Patel then handed over her gold ornaments, valued at ₹4.40 lakh. The men reportedly wrapped the jewellery in paper and placed it in a bag before allowing her to leave. When she reached home and opened the package, she allegedly found imitation ornaments instead of her gold jewellery. Vatva police have registered a case and begun an investigation.
The second complaint was filed by Mohammadfaizan Memon, an egg trader living in Memon Colony behind Cozy Hotel on Narol Road. The report states that he contacted Mustaq Sheikh and Sarfaraz Sheikh through acquaintances after looking for a house to live in. The two men allegedly showed him a flat at Star Residency in Narol and agreed to provide it as security for ₹5 lakh for 11 months and 29 days.
A notarised agreement was reportedly executed at Bhadra Court. Memon allegedly paid ₹1 lakh in cash and ₹4 lakh by cheque, but the possession of the flat was not handed over. The accused allegedly continued postponing the handover and later refused to return the money, saying that Sarfaraz had given the property to someone else. Narol police have registered a complaint in the matter.
The third case concerns an alleged digital banking fraud involving Dineshbhai Thakor, a resident of Devimata Thakor Vas in Vatva who works for a private company in Sanand. An unidentified caller allegedly claimed to be speaking from the HDFC Bank credit-card department and offered to activate a facility that would allow cash to be withdrawn from a card through Google Pay.
After Thakor entered a number sent by the caller into an application, ₹98,000 was allegedly withdrawn from his savings account. The caller then switched off the phone. A subsequent bank message allegedly informed Thakor that a ₹1 lakh loan had also been taken through the credit card, with a monthly instalment of ₹6,180. The report puts the total loss at ₹1.98 lakh. Vatva police have registered a cyber-fraud complaint.
The three complaints show the different forms of fraud being reported in the eastern part of the city: street-level deception involving a senior citizen, a property-possession dispute involving a notarised agreement, and a digital financial transaction initiated through a purported bank call. Police investigations in the three cases will determine the identities of the accused and the flow of the allegedly misappropriated money. The cases are being handled by Vatva and Narol police stations.
