Delhi Metro Blue Line Trains Undergo Major Upgrade
Delhi’s rapid transit system has begun an extensive mid-life upgrade of its earliest train sets, marking a key step in maintaining safety and reliability across one of the country’s busiest urban rail networks. The Delhi Metro Blue Line refurbishment programme focuses on modernising trains that have been in continuous service for nearly two decades, bringing them in line with updated operational and passenger safety standards. Transit officials confirm that several of the oldest trains running on the Blue and Red corridors—introduced in the early years of the network—are being systematically overhauled as part of a multi-phase refurbishment programme. These trains, initially inducted between the early and mid-2000s, have formed the backbone of daily commuting across densely populated corridors connecting eastern, western and central parts of the capital.
The Delhi Metro Blue Line refurbishment initiative covers a total fleet of about 70 trains that will be upgraded in phases over the coming years. Interior surfaces are being renewed to address long-term wear from heavy passenger usage, while electrical systems are being modernised to improve reliability and reduce service interruptions.

Refitted trains now include digital passenger information systems capable of delivering real-time announcements and route updates. LCD-based route maps and enhanced communication systems are designed to improve passenger awareness of station arrivals and interchange connections. Safety infrastructure within the trains is also being strengthened. Engineers are installing advanced fire detection equipment that uses smoke and temperature sensors to identify potential hazards early. In addition, older electrical relays and circuit breakers are being replaced with upgraded units designed to provide more stable power distribution within the coaches. Passenger comfort and convenience have also been addressed through new features such as charging points for electronic devices, reflecting evolving commuter expectations in modern transit environments.
