Delhi Green Infrastructure Gains Focus In Pollution Fight
Delhi’s next phase of air-pollution management is shifting from isolated tree plantation to a broader urban landscape strategy that links vegetation, wetlands, open spaces and public transport. Discussions at the latest Clean Air Dialogue have placed blue-green infrastructure at the centre of the city’s environmental planning, with the approach carrying implications for public health, flood resilience and the future design of Delhi-NCR’s expanding built environment.
The policy direction reflects a growing recognition that planting trees alone cannot address the environmental pressures created by dense construction, traffic and exposed soil. Urban planners and environmental experts are increasingly pushing for connected ecological systems, where parks, water bodies, floodplains and roadside green belts work together rather than operate as disconnected projects. Delhi green infrastructure is therefore being viewed as a tool with multiple urban functions. Vegetated corridors along roads can help reduce dust movement, while wetlands and permeable landscapes can absorb rainwater and reduce pressure on drainage systems during intense rainfall. For residents, the benefits extend beyond air quality to shade, walkability and improved access to public open spaces.
The city’s reported increase in green cover over the past 25 years is significant, but the headline figure also raises a more important planning question: how much of this green cover is accessible, ecologically functional and protected from future construction pressure? A larger percentage on paper does not automatically translate into cleaner air or lower urban heat if green spaces remain fragmented or poorly maintained. Officials are also moving towards more systematic tree inventories, an important step for monitoring urban vegetation and informing infrastructure decisions. Such data could become increasingly relevant as Delhi balances road expansion, housing demand and climate risks. Without accurate mapping, mature trees and ecological assets can remain invisible in project planning.
The wider strategy includes the distribution of 10 lakh free saplings this year and continued ecological restoration efforts along the Yamuna floodplain. The Delhi government is also expanding electric bus deployment, with the 2026-27 budget outlining additional procurement and a longer-term target of substantially increasing the city’s electric bus fleet. The larger challenge now is implementation. Delhi green infrastructure will deliver measurable gains only if new plantations survive, ecological corridors remain connected and transport, housing and road projects are assessed against their cumulative environmental impact. For a rapidly urbanising NCR, the shift from planting individual trees to managing connected natural systems could prove more consequential than any single plantation drive.
