Delhi EV Charging Network Expands As Monsoon Gaps Persist

Delhi is simultaneously expanding the infrastructure needed for cleaner mobility and confronting the weaknesses of its basic urban systems. A high-capacity EV charging facility has opened at the New Ashok Nagar Namo Bharat station, while 24 locations have been identified for urgent drainage intervention after the season’s first major rain exposed recurring waterlogging risks. Together, the developments highlight the uneven pace of Delhi’s urban transition.

The new EV charging network facility has 14 DC charging points, including 240 kW, 360 kW and 480 kW units. The mix is designed to serve private cars, commercial vehicles and electric buses, giving the station relevance beyond daily commuters. With charging facilities now available at nine Namo Bharat stations, the rail corridor is gradually becoming part of a wider electric mobility ecosystem rather than functioning only as a passenger transport route. The expansion is significant as Delhi seeks to reduce dependence on fossil-fuel vehicles. However, the usefulness of high-speed charging will ultimately depend on access, pricing, grid capacity and reliable connections to neighbourhoods. For many residents, the transition to electric mobility will require infrastructure that is distributed across the city, not concentrated only around major transport nodes.

That question of uneven infrastructure is equally visible in the monsoon response. Delhi Traffic Police has flagged 24 locations where drainage failures contributed to waterlogging and traffic disruption after heavy rain. Several sites include underpasses, arterial roads and busy junctions, showing how drainage weaknesses can quickly become mobility and economic problems. The recurrence of some vulnerable locations also raises questions about whether seasonal preparations are addressing root causes or simply managing the consequences. A proposed precast RCC drainage system linking Mandi Road with Bandh Road is another attempt to address a long-standing flooding problem. Public works documents also indicate provisions for pumping stations, suggesting that drainage upgrades are increasingly being planned as integrated systems rather than isolated road repairs.

Meanwhile, plans to renovate 26 toilets at Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital in Pitampura point to another often-overlooked dimension of urban infrastructure: everyday public facilities. Clean, accessible sanitation is essential to patients, caregivers and hospital staff, particularly in high-footfall public institutions. For Delhi, the larger challenge is coordination. A climate-resilient city cannot prioritise visible technology while basic drainage, public sanitation and everyday access remain uneven. The next phase of urban investment will need to connect cleaner mobility with resilient civic infrastructure, ensuring that sustainability improves daily life across the city rather than only at its newest transport hubs.
