Pune Rail Disruptions Continue Until July Twenty Four

Pune: Rail connectivity between Pune and Mumbai will continue to operate under restrictions until July 24 as restoration work on a damaged railway corridor in the Bhor Ghat section remains incomplete following monsoon-induced landslides. While two of the affected tracks have resumed operations, authorities say full service restoration depends on repairing the remaining line, a critical link for maintaining normal train capacity across one of Maharashtra’s busiest rail corridors.

The disruption stems from intense rainfall earlier this month that triggered multiple landslides between Karjat and Lonavala, damaging all three railway tracks traversing the steep Western Ghats. Although railway engineers have reopened two lines after extensive debris clearance and track stabilisation, work on the third corridor continues amid challenging terrain and intermittent rainfall. Officials have deployed a large workforce, specialised machinery and geotechnical teams across the ghat section to restore infrastructure while maintaining operational safety. The remaining repair work includes slope stabilisation, drainage improvements and inspection of vulnerable embankments to reduce the risk of further disruptions during the ongoing monsoon season. The continued restrictions mean several long-distance and intercity services linked to Pune will remain cancelled, partially terminated or diverted through alternative routes until July 24. Diversions via Daund, Manmad, Igatpuri and other sections are being used to maintain connectivity wherever operationally feasible, though passengers are expected to experience longer travel times and schedule changes.

The prolonged disruption underlines the vulnerability of transport infrastructure passing through ecologically sensitive mountain corridors. Urban planners and transport specialists note that extreme rainfall events are becoming more frequent, increasing pressure on ageing rail assets built across landslide-prone terrain. They argue that climate-resilient engineering, continuous slope monitoring and improved drainage systems will be essential for ensuring long-term reliability on critical freight and passenger routes. Railway authorities have advised passengers to verify train schedules before travelling, as operational adjustments may continue depending on weather conditions and engineering progress. As restoration advances, transport experts emphasise that rebuilding damaged infrastructure should not focus solely on reopening services quickly.
