Pune Metro Line Three Nears Passenger Launch

Pune: Passenger services on the first operational section of Pune Metro Line 3 are expected to commence within the coming week after the completion of mandatory safety inspections, marking a significant milestone for one of the city’s most anticipated urban mobility projects. The initial stretch is expected to improve daily connectivity between Pune’s western IT corridor and rapidly growing residential neighbourhoods while offering an alternative to congested road travel.

The opening phase of Pune Metro Line 3 will connect Maan in Hinjawadi with Balewadi over approximately 13.3 kilometres through 12 stations. The corridor is designed to serve thousands of commuters travelling to the Hinjawadi technology hub, an area that has witnessed sustained employment growth but continues to face chronic traffic congestion due to heavy dependence on private vehicles and buses. According to government officials, the corridor has completed its statutory inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, during which technical observations and safety recommendations were issued. The executing agencies have since addressed these requirements and submitted compliance documentation for final approval. Authorities expect the remaining regulatory process to conclude shortly, allowing passenger operations to begin once the mandatory clearance is received. Urban mobility experts note that the launch of Pune Metro Line 3 represents more than the opening of another transit corridor. The project is expected to strengthen multimodal connectivity, reduce peak-hour road congestion and support a gradual shift towards public transport. Lower dependence on private vehicles could also contribute to reduced fuel consumption, improved air quality and lower transport-related emissions in one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.

The first phase is expected to offer affordable fares, making rapid transit more accessible to office workers, students and residents travelling between Hinjawadi, Wakad and Balewadi. Improved travel reliability could also enhance productivity by reducing unpredictable journey times that currently affect commuters travelling through the western suburbs. Construction activity on the remaining section between Balewadi and the city centre continues simultaneously. Officials aim to complete this phase in the coming months, eventually creating a continuous metro connection between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar. Once operational, the full corridor is expected to integrate with Pune’s expanding public transport network, improving access to commercial districts, educational institutions and intercity transport hubs.

Urban planners believe the success of the project will ultimately depend on seamless integration with buses, pedestrian infrastructure and last-mile connectivity. Efficient feeder services, safe station access and coordinated urban planning will be essential to maximise ridership and ensure that metro investments translate into long-term improvements in sustainable mobility. As Pune continues to expand, transport infrastructure that prioritises accessibility, environmental resilience and efficient land use is expected to play a critical role in shaping future urban growth.
