Chennai MRTS Takeover Awaits Final Railway Approval
Chennai’s long-pending plan to transfer the 19-km Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to the metro network remains stalled as the Railway Board continues to review the proposal. The move, estimated at around ₹4,200 crore, could reshape one of the city’s oldest suburban transit corridors by improving station infrastructure, commuter experience and integration with wider public transport systems.
The proposed transition, first discussed as a way to bring MRTS under unified urban transport planning, is awaiting formal clearance before the Tamil Nadu government and Southern Railway can proceed with an agreement. Officials involved in the process expect approval soon, following which the transfer of assets and operational responsibilities will begin in phases. The Chennai MRTS takeover is expected to include the transfer of key assets such as railway stations, tracks, signalling infrastructure, electrical systems, land parcels and train assets. However, Southern Railway is likely to continue operating and maintaining the corridor during an interim period before Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) assumes complete responsibility.
For commuters, the significance of the Chennai MRTS takeover lies in addressing years of infrastructure gaps across the elevated network. Several stations currently face challenges including ageing facilities, poor ventilation, inadequate lighting, limited passenger amenities and unreliable vertical access systems such as lifts and escalators. Urban transport experts say improving existing transit assets is as important as building new infrastructure, particularly in a growing metropolitan region where road congestion and private vehicle dependence continue to increase. A more reliable MRTS system could encourage greater public transport usage while reducing pressure on city roads and emissions from private mobility.CMRL and the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) have already assessed stations along the corridor, examining passenger facilities and identifying opportunities for better utilisation of available spaces. The assessment also includes possibilities for commercial activity around stations, though planners emphasise that future development must prioritise accessibility, safety and public convenience.
A senior transport official said station upgrades would require detailed planning and consultancy support after the ownership transition is completed. Proposed improvements are expected to focus on cleaner facilities, enhanced security measures, improved parking arrangements and better commuter services. Plans for introducing air-conditioned trains are also being examined, though procurement and implementation could take additional time.The corridor connects several important residential and commercial areas, including Beach, Triplicane, Mylapore and Velachery, making its revival significant for daily workers, students, senior citizens and women commuters who depend on affordable public transport. The Chennai MRTS takeover represents more than an administrative transfer. It offers an opportunity to modernise an existing transport asset through climate-conscious planning, inclusive design and better integration with the city’s expanding mobility network. The next challenge will be ensuring that upgrades translate into a safer, cleaner and more dependable transit experience for everyday users.
