Chennai Metro Corridor 5 Work Triggers Thirumangalam Road Closure

Chennai’s Thirumangalam junction will undergo a major traffic adjustment for nearly a year as infrastructure works linked to Metro Phase-II Corridor 5 and stormwater improvements begin on July 13. The closure of a key service road along Jawaharlal Nehru Road is expected to affect daily commuters, freight movement, and neighbourhood connectivity, highlighting the challenges of expanding urban infrastructure within a densely developed city.

The left-side service road on the 100 Feet Road stretch near Thirumangalam will remain inaccessible until July 12, 2027, according to traffic management plans. Authorities have introduced alternate routes to reduce congestion while construction activity continues in one of Chennai’s busiest transport corridors. The Chennai Metro Corridor 5 work forms part of the city’s wider public transport expansion strategy, aimed at improving connectivity across growing residential and commercial zones. However, large-scale transit projects often require temporary disruption, particularly in established urban areas where road space is limited.

Urban planners note that managing construction impacts is becoming increasingly important as Chennai expands its mobility network. Better coordination between transport projects, drainage upgrades, and road management systems can help reduce delays and maintain access for pedestrians, public transport users, and local businesses.Vehicles moving from the Padi flyover towards Ambattur will need to take alternate routes through 18th Main Road or 6th Avenue. Traffic towards Koyambedu will continue through the Thirumangalam flyover, allowing movement to continue along one of the city’s major arterial links.A separate traffic change has also been announced in KK Nagar, where Jeevanandham Salai will face restrictions until November 10 for stormwater drain construction along PT Rajan Road. Vehicles from the KK Nagar Bus Terminus heading towards Jawaharlal Nehru Road will be redirected through Ashok Pillar Junction. The simultaneous execution of Metro and drainage projects reflects Chennai’s effort to address two critical urban priorities: sustainable mobility and climate resilience. Stormwater infrastructure has become increasingly significant as extreme rainfall events expose weaknesses in city drainage networks.

Experts suggest that construction planning must focus beyond project completion timelines. Maintaining safe pedestrian movement, reducing travel uncertainty, and ensuring access to homes and businesses during long-duration works are essential for inclusive urban development. The Chennai Metro Corridor 5 work is expected to support future mobility improvements, but its short-term impact will depend on how effectively traffic diversions are managed.
