Chennai Corridor Upgrades Trigger Rail Disruptions
Large-scale rail maintenance and infrastructure upgrades on the Chennai–Bengaluru corridor have triggered widespread service disruptions from Thursday, affecting thousands of intercity passengers, office commuters and business travellers across southern India’s busiest economic route.
Southern Railway has introduced a series of train cancellations, diversions and partial route changes scheduled to continue until early July as engineering teams undertake track renewal and signalling modernisation works. The temporary operational changes are expected to impact peak-hour mobility between two of the country’s major technology and manufacturing hubs, placing additional pressure on road and air transport networks.Several high-demand services connecting Chennai, Bengaluru and Mysuru have either been suspended or rerouted through alternate junctions including Katpadi and Jolarpettai. Among the affected services, the Shatabdi Express has been placed on a diverted route, while the Lalbagh Express has been cancelled for selected schedules during the maintenance window. The Double Decker service will operate with partial disruptions and certain Mysuru-bound trains are being redirected through alternate alignments, resulting in extended travel durations and skipped station halts.The Chennai Bengaluru train disruptions are already influencing travel behaviour across the region. Bus operators have reported higher booking volumes on intercity routes, while airfares between the two cities are witnessing periodic increases due to rising demand.
