Bengaluru’s long-delayed Okalipuram Eight-Lane Corridor has come under a fresh completion push, with the Greater Bengaluru Authority seeking a revised schedule for pending works. The latest intervention focuses on the approach road to the railway station, retaining walls, drainage and water removal beneath the railway tracks.
The progress matters for central Bengaluru, where unfinished infrastructure continues to affect traffic movement and the reliability of connections between Majestic, the railway station and Rajajinagar. The project has already moved through several stages, but remaining works are preventing the corridor from reaching its full operational potential. During a recent inspection, the GBA chief commissioner directed officials to prepare a new schedule and accelerate construction. The approach road linking the corridor towards the railway station remains under development, while retaining-wall work is also pending. A major part of the current work is below the railway tracks. Two box structures have been pushed beneath the Chennai railway line, creating an important connection for the corridor. Officials have now been asked to clean the structures and complete associated works so that vehicular movement can be facilitated once the remaining infrastructure is ready. Around 300 loads of construction waste and soil have reportedly already been removed from the section where the boxes were installed. Drainage is emerging as an equally important component. Wastewater leakage beneath the railway box has prompted coordination with railway authorities, while accumulated water at the construction site is being pumped out.
A 1,200mm-diameter stormwater drain intended to improve water flow is about 65% complete. Finishing this system is particularly relevant for a corridor exposed to heavy monsoon runoff, where poor drainage could undermine newly completed road infrastructure. The Bengaluru Okalipuram Corridor is significant because it is intended to improve movement through one of the city’s older and densely developed transport zones. Better connectivity between Majestic, the railway station and western Bengaluru could reduce delays on surrounding roads and make journeys more predictable. However, the benefits will depend on completing the entire network rather than opening isolated sections. There is also a wider planning lesson. Large road projects can create new bottlenecks when drainage, pedestrian access, railway interfaces and approach roads are treated as secondary components. For a people-first transport system, the final design needs to accommodate not only vehicles but also pedestrians, public transport users and safe movement around railway infrastructure.
The immediate priority is therefore to convert the revised schedule into measurable completion milestones. For the Bengaluru Okalipuram Corridor, finishing drainage and structural works alongside the approach roads will be essential to ensuring that the investment delivers reliable connectivity rather than another partially completed urban transport link.
