Bengaluru Food Delivery Market Sees New Competition

Bengaluru’s food-delivery market is seeing another shift in competition, with Rapido’s Ownly reportedly crossing 50,000 daily food orders in the city and preparing for expansion into additional markets. The development signals continued demand for app-based meal delivery in one of India’s largest urban consumption centres, while raising broader questions around delivery-worker livelihoods, traffic and the environmental cost of increasingly frequent last-mile trips.

Ownly’s reported order volume places Bengaluru at the centre of its growth strategy. The platform is understood to be preparing a wider rollout beyond the city, although the company’s expansion plans will depend on building sufficient restaurant participation, delivery capacity and customer demand in each market. Bengaluru offers favourable conditions for food-delivery businesses. A large population of technology workers, students and professionals, combined with long commuting times and dense employment clusters, has created strong demand for convenience-led services. Food delivery also allows restaurants to reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods without requiring additional dining space. The rapid growth of delivery platforms, however, has an urban cost. Thousands of daily trips by two-wheelers add to traffic volumes, particularly around office districts and high-density residential areas during lunch and dinner peaks. While individual delivery journeys are relatively short, their cumulative effect matters in a city already struggling with congestion and road-space constraints.

The expansion also affects the economics of small restaurants. Digital platforms can provide access to a larger customer base, but commissions, discounts, packaging costs and delivery charges influence how much revenue restaurants ultimately retain. A competitive market could benefit consumers through greater choice and potentially lower prices, but sustainable economics for restaurants and delivery workers will remain important as platforms scale. For delivery workers, growth in order volumes can create additional earning opportunities, but the quality of those opportunities depends on pay structures, incentives, fuel costs, waiting time and working conditions. A more mature delivery economy will need to account for these factors alongside customer convenience. There is also an environmental dimension. Food delivery generates packaging waste and additional vehicle movement. Restaurants and platforms can reduce some of this impact through recyclable or reusable packaging, better route allocation and delivery models that reduce unnecessary kilometres.

The reported growth of Ownly therefore represents more than a new competitor in Bengaluru’s food-app market. It reflects the city’s wider transition towards on-demand urban services. As these platforms expand, their long-term success will increasingly depend on whether convenience can be delivered alongside viable livelihoods, responsible consumption and lower pressure on the city’s already stretched mobility and waste systems.
