The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has sanctioned significant upgrades to aviation infrastructure at Bagdogra and Bihta airports, marking a substantial step towards enhancing regional connectivity. The approved projects, amounting to a combined investment of Rs 2,962 crore, are poised to transform the operational capacities and efficiency of these key airports.
Union Minister for Civil Aviation lauded the decision, stating, “The Cabinet’s approval of these critical projects underscores our commitment to improving air travel infrastructure. The development at Bagdogra and Bihta airports is essential to meet the escalating demand for air services and to bolster regional connectivity across India.”
The new civil enclave at Bagdogra is set to be developed with an investment of Rs 1,549 crore. The project includes the construction of a modern terminal covering 70,390 square metres, designed to handle 3,000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP) and an annual passenger flow of up to 10 million. The development will also feature an apron with 10 parking bays for A-321-type aircraft, two link taxiways, and a multi-level car parking facility. The terminal is being designed as a Green Building, incorporating renewable energy sources and optimising natural light, aligning with contemporary sustainability standards.
Similarly, the Bihta airport will see an investment of Rs 1,413 crore for its new civil enclave. This project aims to address the growing congestion issues at Patna Airport by constructing a new terminal spanning 66,000 square metres. The terminal will initially support 3,000 PHP and an annual capacity of 5 million passengers, with future expansion capabilities to accommodate up to 10 million passengers. The Bihta development will also include an apron with 10 parking bays suitable for A-321/B-737-800/A-320 aircraft types and two link taxiways.
“These projects are designed not merely as infrastructural expansions but as forward-thinking investments to cater to future needs and foster economic growth in the regions they serve,” the Union Minister emphasised. He assured that both projects will be executed with a focus on timely delivery and adherence to the highest standards, ensuring they meet both current demands and future requirements. The approval of these projects reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the country’s aviation infrastructure, positioning Bagdogra and Bihta as pivotal hubs in India’s expanding air travel network.
