Andhra Pradesh Advances Inland Waterways Development

Andhra Pradesh is making significant strides in developing its inland waterways to bolster transport efficiency and economic growth.

The state’s Inland Waterways Authority (APIWA) is spearheading initiatives to interlink major rivers, including the Krishna, Godavari, and Penna, aiming to create a seamless and sustainable water transport network. The strategic interlinking of these rivers is expected to facilitate the movement of goods, particularly from cement and power plant sectors, through National Waterways. This development aligns with the central government’s Maritime India Vision 2030, which envisions a substantial increase in the utilization of inland waterways for cargo movement.

APIWA’s plans include establishing connectivity between cement factories in Muktyala and Jaggaiahpet with Kakinada and Machilipatnam ports via the Krishna River and Bandar Canal. Additionally, linking the Kadapa region’s cement factories and power plants to Krishnapatnam port through the Penna River is projected to handle nearly 14 million tonnes of cargo annually. The introduction of roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferry services at key locations such as Muktyala, Ibrahimpatnam, and Seethanagaram on the Krishna and Godavari rivers is also underway. These services aim to reduce road congestion and provide an eco-friendly alternative for transporting goods.

Furthermore, the development of water-bound tourism projects along the 978-kilometre National Waterway network is being explored. These initiatives are poised to enhance regional connectivity and promote sustainable tourism, contributing to the state’s economic diversification. APIWA’s efforts are supported by the central government’s commitment to invest ₹50,000 crore over the next five years to develop inland waterways infrastructure. This funding will facilitate the construction of floating steel jetties, feasibility studies for the Penna River, and the preparation of Detailed Project Reports for National Waterway-4.

The establishment of the Andhra Pradesh Inland Waterways Authority Act in 2023 has provided a legal framework to regulate and promote inland water transport, ensuring safe navigation and fostering industrial growth along the waterways. As Andhra Pradesh continues to develop its inland waterways, the focus remains on creating an interconnected, sustainable, and economically viable transport network that aligns with the state’s vision for a greener and more efficient future.
