The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to open two long-awaited flyovers at Carnac and Vikhroli, with construction works completed and final launch dates expected to be announced shortly.
The move is expected to bring major relief to Mumbai’s congested east-west traffic corridors. The Carnac flyover, located near Masjid Bandar station, replaces an earlier bridge deemed unsafe by Central Railway and aims to restore a crucial east-west link between P.D’Mello Road and Mohammad Ali Road. The newly constructed flyover spans 70 metres within railway limits, with an additional 155 metres on the eastern approach and 255 metres on the western side. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar, who inspected the site on May 22, confirmed that approach roads and crash barriers have been completed. Painting, lighting, and signage are on track for completion by June 10. A mandatory load test will be conducted before the bridge is opened to the public.
Simultaneously, the Vikhroli flyover, which connects Lal Bahadur Shastri Road to the Eastern Express Highway, is expected to drastically reduce commute times between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs — potentially by as much as 30 minutes. According to civic officials, final surfacing and barrier work is underway on the western slope, with the steep incline at Lal Bahadur Shastri Road being levelled out for smoother access. The flyover is on track to be ready by May 31. “These two flyovers are key additions to BMC’s broader infrastructure plan to decongest traffic through flyovers, pedestrian bridges, and skywalks across Mumbai,” said a senior BMC official. “Once operational, both projects will significantly improve city connectivity.”
The civic body is coordinating with the transport department to schedule formal inaugurations. Both flyovers are likely to open in the first half of June, marking a crucial upgrade to the city’s overstretched road infrastructure.
