Ahmedabad: A fresh spell of monsoon rainfall accompanied by a red weather alert placed Ahmedabad’s urban infrastructure under renewed scrutiny on Friday, even though precipitation remained below the levels many residents had feared. While rainfall was uneven across the city, localised flooding and traffic disruption once again highlighted persistent concerns around stormwater management, mobility and climate resilience.
The India Meteorological Department maintained a red alert for Ahmedabad district, warning that isolated areas could still receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the weekend. Although cumulative rainfall during the day was significantly lower than earlier extreme weather events this season, several western neighbourhoods experienced intense evening showers that overwhelmed local drainage systems. According to civic records, multiple low-lying stretches reported water accumulation, particularly in western parts of the city where transport corridors and residential districts have witnessed rapid urban expansion in recent years. Areas surrounding major arterial roads and developing urban clusters experienced slow-moving traffic as rainwater remained on carriageways for extended periods. Among the locations receiving the highest rainfall were Thaltej, Bodakdev and Science City, where intense downpours during evening hours added pressure on drainage networks. Service roads along the SG Highway corridor and adjoining neighbourhoods were among the areas affected, with temporary flooding disrupting routine movement.
Authorities had encouraged organisations to adopt work-from-home arrangements wherever operationally feasible, a measure that contributed to relatively lighter traffic volumes across several parts of the city. However, commuters travelling during peak rainfall periods still encountered long delays as waterlogged intersections and reduced road capacity slowed vehicle movement. Urban planners say such recurring disruptions illustrate a broader challenge facing fast-growing cities, where expanding built-up areas, increasing paved surfaces and large infrastructure projects can alter natural drainage patterns if stormwater planning does not keep pace. Temporary flooding around construction zones has also emerged as a recurring concern, particularly where surface runoff is diverted onto adjoining roads.
Transport experts note that while rainfall intensity remains an uncontrollable natural factor, the scale of disruption is increasingly shaped by urban design decisions. Better integration of drainage systems with transport infrastructure, routine maintenance of stormwater networks and the preservation of natural water channels are viewed as essential components of building Ahmedabad rain resilience as extreme weather events become more frequent. Climate specialists have repeatedly warned that western Indian cities are likely to experience shorter but more intense rainfall episodes under changing climatic conditions. This increases the importance of resilient urban infrastructure capable of managing sudden cloudbursts without severely affecting mobility, economic activity or public safety. With the weather department continuing its warning for the district, civic agencies are expected to remain on high alert over the coming days.
