Ahmedabad Elevated Corridor Nears Key Traffic Milestone

AHMEDABAD: A six-lane elevated corridor on the S.G. Highway is emerging as one of Ahmedabad’s most significant road projects aimed at separating through traffic from local junction movements. The roughly 4-km structure between the ISKCON and Sanand side of the corridor is designed to bypass major bottlenecks around YMCA, Karnavati Club and Prahladnagar, potentially improving one of western Ahmedabad’s most heavily used regional links.

The project has faced schedule slippages. Public updates earlier this year had indicated a July opening, while a July project update said the completion deadline had moved to September 30 after difficult ground conditions affected ramp construction. The YMCA-Karnavati section had also remained closed for an extended period, forcing motorists onto diversions. The disruption has carried a measurable cost for daily commuters. A July assessment estimated that around 1.5 lakh motorists were being diverted by nearly four kilometres each day, adding time and fuel consumption to journeys. That makes completion more than an infrastructure milestone: it could directly affect household travel costs, freight movement and business connectivity across western Ahmedabad. The corridor’s main benefit will come from allowing longer-distance traffic to pass above signalised junctions instead of repeatedly entering local traffic streams. The design includes access arrangements around key junctions, allowing the elevated route to function alongside surface roads rather than replacing them.

Structurally, the project uses a single-pier configuration intended to reduce the footprint of bridge supports along the highway. Public project information describes a six-lane, approximately four-kilometre corridor with a 27-metre width. The overall project cost has been reported at around Rs 530 crore, up from the original award value cited in earlier updates. For Ahmedabad’s urban economy, the strategic value is broader than faster car journeys. The S.G. Highway connects residential districts, commercial centres and the Sanand industrial belt. Better traffic reliability can reduce wasted fuel and travel time, while more predictable journeys can improve access to employment and services. Yet the project also highlights a recurring urban-planning question. Building elevated capacity can move through-traffic faster, but it does not automatically solve congestion on feeder roads or local junctions. If surface traffic, pedestrian movement and public transport remain poorly integrated, bottlenecks can simply shift further along the corridor.

The Ahmedabad elevated corridor therefore needs to be assessed not only by opening day traffic speeds but by how well the complete road network functions afterwards. Safe pedestrian crossings, usable surface roads, public transport integration, drainage and efficient junction management will determine whether the investment delivers lasting urban mobility gains. For residents and businesses affected by the prolonged construction period, the immediate priority is a reliable completion schedule and safe restoration of disrupted routes. The longer-term test will be whether the Ahmedabad elevated corridor supports a more efficient, lower-waste transport system without encouraging unchecked dependence on private vehicles.
