AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is preparing to shift part of the city’s road-maintenance work from manual labour to mechanised cleaning, proposing four specialised machines for washing roadside guard railings along major roads and BRTS and Metro corridors. The proposed base expenditure of ₹8.28 crore, before GST, puts routine public-infrastructure maintenance under scrutiny as Ahmedabad expands its transport network.
Under the proposal, each machine is estimated to cost about ₹2.07 crore before GST. The equipment would be deployed on road dividers, central verges and other stretches where guard railings accumulate dust and grime. The civic body’s Standing Committee is expected to consider the proposal before final approval. The plan also includes a five-year operation and maintenance arrangement. During the initial warranty period, each machine is expected to operate for eight hours a day, with an estimated daily operating cost of about ₹18,540. That figure is projected to rise to roughly ₹18,990 per machine per day after the warranty period.
The procurement raises a broader question for Ahmedabad: whether mechanisation can deliver better maintenance outcomes without creating another layer of long-term operating expenditure. The initial purchase is only one component of the cost. Fuel, water, staffing, repairs, spare parts and eventual replacement will determine the machines’ full lifecycle cost. For a city increasingly dependent on mass-transit corridors, the maintenance issue is significant. Ahmedabad’s Metro network and BRTS corridors form part of a wider public transport system designed to move large numbers of people while reducing pressure on road-based travel. The city’s Metro network has already expanded substantially, with the operational system reaching 68.28 km and 53 stations across Phases I and II, according to official information. Clean and well-maintained roadside infrastructure also has a practical safety dimension. Guard rails and central barriers help organise vehicle movement, while poorly maintained surfaces can reduce visibility and contribute to a neglected streetscape. Regular mechanised washing could make maintenance more consistent, particularly across long corridors where manual cleaning is slower and difficult to schedule.
However, water use deserves attention. Large-scale washing of road infrastructure can add to municipal water demand, especially during periods of seasonal stress. Urban infrastructure experts say any mechanised cleaning programme should therefore measure water consumption, explore recycled or treated water where feasible, and track cleaning frequency against actual need. The proposal reportedly follows acceptance of the lowest tender from a private operator, subject to the civic approval process. The focus now should remain on measurable service standards rather than procurement alone. The Ahmedabad road cleaning programme could become useful if the machines reduce maintenance gaps, improve working conditions and extend the life of roadside infrastructure. But its success should ultimately be judged through transparent measures such as cost per kilometre, water consumed, cleaning frequency and infrastructure condition. As Ahmedabad continues investing in Metro, BRTS and road networks, maintaining existing assets efficiently will be as important as building new ones. The city’s next challenge is to make that maintenance cleaner, measurable and financially sustainable.
