Chennai Metro Yellow Line Moves to 6 AM After Commuter Feedback

Chennai Metro Rail Limited will advance the start of passenger services on the Phase II Corridor 4, or Yellow Line, to 6 am from October 23 after receiving feedback from commuters. The revised schedule will cover the 15-km stretch between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani, where services currently operate across 11 elevated stations.

Trains will run in both directions from 6 am to 9 pm, with the last services departing from Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani at 9 pm. The earlier start is intended to improve connectivity for passengers travelling during the first part of the day, particularly those moving towards Vadapalani and Poonamallee.

From Monday to Saturday, trains will operate every 10 minutes during the two peak periods: 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 8 pm. During non-peak hours, including the early-morning window from 6 am to 8 am, the interval will be 15 minutes.

The Sunday and public holiday timetable will be different. Trains will run every 15 minutes throughout the day from 6 am to 9 pm, without a separate peak-hour schedule. The arrangement gives the corridor a uniform frequency on days when weekday commuter peaks do not apply.

The timing revision comes shortly after Chennai Metro Rail Limited began regular passenger services on the Corridor 4 stretch on October 11. The corridor forms part of Chennai Metro’s Phase II network and is intended to connect the western side of the city with the Vadapalani area through an elevated alignment.

For passengers, the change means the first Yellow Line trains will be available before the weekday peak-hour frequency begins at 8 am. However, commuters using the line between 6 am and 8 am will have to plan around a 15-minute interval, rather than the 10-minute frequency scheduled for the later morning peak. The same 15-minute interval will apply through non-peak periods and across Sundays and public holidays.

CMRL’s decision follows commuter feedback received after the corridor entered regular operations. The revised hours also establish a consistent service window of 6 am to 9 pm in both directions, with the final departures from both terminals scheduled for 9 pm. The updated timetable takes effect on October 23.
