NDMC Water Supply Cut Hits Key Delhi Areas Until Nov 8

Water supply across several New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) areas will remain reduced until Nov 8 after supply from the Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant was shut down for scheduled annual maintenance and repair work on the Upper Ganga Canal, an NDMC official said.

The official said the shutdown would continue until midnight on Nov 8, affecting the overall water supply in the civic body’s jurisdiction. During the closure, water will be supplied from the Yamuna River instead, which may lead to a variation in taste, the official said.

“During this closure period, water will be supplied from the Yamuna River. Consequently, the taste of the supplied water may vary. Additionally, a reduction in water supply is expected in the affected areas and may continue in this period,” the official said.

The affected areas include Bharti Nagar, Golf Links, Lodhi Estate, Khan Market, Rabindra Nagar, parts of Lodhi Road, the High Court area, Bapa Nagar, parts of Pandara Road and Pandara Park, Jor Bagh, parts of Lodhi Colony, BK Dutt Colony, Amrita Shergil Marg, parts of Janpath, Aliganj, parts of Prithviraj Road, Kidwai Nagar and Laxmibai Nagar.

The disruption will also affect the President’s Estate, the New PMO, Kaka Nagar, JJ Camp near Safdarjung flyover and JJ Camp near the Delhi Flying Club. The affected locations include residential neighbourhoods, government premises, institutional areas and commercial districts, making the interruption relevant to a broad range of water users within central Delhi.

The Upper Ganga Canal maintenance is a scheduled annual exercise, according to the NDMC information cited in the announcement. The temporary closure has required the civic body to use the Yamuna as an alternative source for the affected supply network. The official did not provide details in the supplied information about the volume reduction, the specific maintenance activities or the areas expected to face the most severe pressure fluctuations.

The change in source may be noticed by consumers through differences in water taste. The NDMC has also warned that reduced supply may continue throughout the closure period. Residents and establishments dependent on regular municipal supply may therefore experience lower availability until the Sonia Vihar supply is restored.

The civic body said people seeking information about booster-pump operations and water services could use the contact numbers provided on the NDMC website. The supplied announcement did not include those numbers. The next stated milestone is the planned continuation of the disruption until midnight on Nov 8, when supply from the Sonia Vihar treatment plant is expected to be affected by the canal maintenance schedule.
