A major section of Thane Coastal Road-1 has crossed the 40 per cent completion mark within 14 months, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) reporting substantial progress on foundations, piers and elevated road structures along the 13.45-km corridor.
Thane | September 9, 2026 — MMRDA said on Wednesday that construction had reached 40 per cent as of September 2. The six-lane, access-controlled greenfield road is being built between Kharegaon Toll Naka and Gaimukh and is intended to reduce congestion on Ghodbunder Road while improving connections towards Thane, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Gujarat and North India.
Construction teams have completed 332 of the 426 working piles, taking piling progress to approximately 77 per cent. Work has also been completed on 277 of the 426 piers, or about 65 per cent of the planned total. In addition, 460 pier caps have been cast for the elevated road structure.
Girder erection is progressing across the project. MMRDA said 501 of the planned 1,632 I-girders had been erected, representing approximately 30 per cent of the total. Thirteen deck-slab spans have also been completed.
The corridor will include a 240-metre creek bridge and an 8.11-km elevated road passing through areas with mangroves. Project authorities said the road is being developed with engineering methods intended to reduce its footprint in environmentally sensitive areas. The project is also described as India’s first greenfield road project to use a single-pile, single-pier system with monopile foundations on land.
A 40-to-45-metre-wide Development Plan road has been reserved for the project. According to the project description, this road is intended to help separate local traffic from intercity movement on Ghodbunder Road, which currently carries traffic serving both local destinations and longer-distance routes.
At Gaimukh, Thane Coastal Road-1 is planned to connect directly with the upcoming Gaimukh-Fountain Hotel Tunnel. MMRDA officials have said that the two projects are expected to improve connectivity between Thane and Bhayandar and further reduce pressure on Ghodbunder Road. They are also expected to support freight movement towards Wadhawan Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, South Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The road is being planned as part of a wider transport network that includes the proposed Thane Ring Metro, Thane Coastal Road-2, the Saket-Amane Elevated Corridor and the Kasarvadavali-Kharbhav Road. Officials said these projects, once integrated, would form an important part of Thane’s future transport system. The update follows a recent meeting held by the state’s transport minister on the city’s transport infrastructure, according to the authority cited in the report.
MMRDA’s latest progress figures indicate that foundation and structural work is advancing at multiple locations. Further project milestones will depend on the completion of the remaining piles, piers, pier caps, girders and deck-slab spans along the corridor.
