Two people were injured after a 15-foot Ganesh idol fell from a trolley while being transported near Sheetal Talao in Mumbai’s Kurla area on September 9, officials said. The idol was damaged in the incident, which took place as the trolley crossed a speed breaker.
According to Mumbai Police, the idol was being brought by a mandal in Dharavi’s Prem Nagar from Bail Baza in V B Nagar when it fell. The trolley was being pulled near Sheetal Talao while the idol was transported for the upcoming Ganeshotsav celebrations.
The injured were identified as Santosh Jaiswal, 28, and Rohit Jaiswal, 25. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said both sustained minor injuries. One person was taken to Kurla Bhabha Hospital and the other to Habib Hospital. Both received treatment and were discharged, according to officials.
The damaged idol was immersed at Sheetal Talao following the incident. Further details about the circumstances of the transport were awaited.
The incident comes weeks after a Ganesh idol collapsed during an arrival procession in south Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar area, killing two people and injuring at least five others. That incident occurred on August 23 during the arrival ceremony of the Bhuleshwarcha Raja idol near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk.
The 10-day Ganeshotsav 2026 is scheduled to begin on September 14 and is observed across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra. Authorities including the BMC, Mumbai Police, Mumbai Fire Brigade, traffic police and emergency services have been involved in managing festival-related processions and public-safety operations.
