Delhi Bound Trains From Jammu Get Extra AC Coaches
Jammu’s rail network is set for a short-term capacity boost this month as Northern Railway moves to deploy additional air-conditioned coaches on three high-demand services connecting the region to Delhi, a move reflecting rising seasonal mobility pressures and the growing strain on India’s pilgrimage-linked transport corridors.
The temporary augmentation, scheduled across mid-June, comes as summer holidays and the annual influx of devotees travelling to the Vaishno Devi shrine drive a surge in passenger movement across Jammu’s rail infrastructure. For one of North India’s busiest religious tourism circuits, the move is expected to ease overcrowding and improve seat availability during peak travel days. Railway officials confirmed that one extra third AC coach will be added to three key services, including the Jammu Tawi-New Delhi Rajdhani route, a special Katra-Delhi service, and the Jammu Tawi-Delhi Sarai Rohilla corridor. The additional coach deployment will run in staggered phases between June 13 and June 20, depending on train schedules. The decision highlights a broader challenge for India’s transport systems: seasonal passenger spikes linked to tourism, pilgrimage and school holidays often outpace fixed rail infrastructure capacity.
Jammu, in particular, has emerged as a strategic mobility hub where religious travel intersects with regional economic activity, generating strong demand for reliable intercity transport. Urban mobility analysts note that rail capacity expansion remains one of the most energy-efficient responses to rising travel demand. Compared with road-based alternatives, railways offer lower carbon intensity per passenger kilometre, reducing congestion and emissions on heavily burdened highway corridors between Jammu and Delhi. The increased coach capacity is also expected to provide indirect economic benefits. Hospitality operators, local transport services and small businesses around Jammu Tawi and Katra stations often witness increased footfall during pilgrimage peaks. Better seat availability can help sustain this ecosystem while reducing last-minute travel uncertainty for families and senior citizens.
However, transport experts argue that temporary solutions alone may not address structural demand growth. With religious tourism and domestic travel steadily rising, planners may need to assess longer-term interventions such as dynamic train scheduling, permanent coach augmentation, and station-area upgrades designed around inclusive and pedestrian-friendly access. Passenger groups have long raised concerns around waitlist congestion during peak pilgrimage periods, especially for women, elderly travellers and lower-income families seeking affordable AC travel in extreme summer temperatures. For now, the additional capacity offers immediate relief. But as Jammu’s role in India’s mobility and tourism economy deepens, the need for resilient, people-first rail planning is becoming harder to ignore.
