BENGALURU | September 3, 2026 — The first 7.5-km section of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Pink Line is ready for passenger operations, according to Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, but its opening date will depend on central government scheduling and pending safety approvals.
Byre Gowda and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya inspected the corridor on Wednesday, travelling by train from Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road to Tavarekere. They reviewed station works, security arrangements and operational systems at Kalena Agrahara Metro station before travelling in the locomotive pilot cabin.
The minister said the section could be opened to the public in September once the Centre fixes an inauguration date. “We are completely ready,” Byre Gowda said, adding that the state expected to receive a suitable date within the month.
The first phase will cover six stations: Kalena Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIM-B, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital and Tavarekere. Jayadeva Hospital will provide an interchange with the Yellow Line, creating a connection between the Pink Line and another corridor in Bengaluru’s expanding metro network.
Surya said the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. was targeting the inauguration of the section by the end of the month. He said he had directed officials, along with the minister and MLA Krishnappa, to complete the remaining work within the targeted deadline and open the corridor for public service.
The MP also said he had discussed safety approvals and the timeline with officials of the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety. Approval for the rolling stock is expected within the next 15 days, after which the safety certificate for the entire section is expected to be issued, according to his statement. The report does not provide a confirmed date for either approval.
The Pink Line’s second phase is planned to extend through Dairy Circle, Lakkasandra, Langford Town, National Military School, MG Road, Shivajinagar, Cantonment Railway Station, Pottery Town, Tannery Road, Venkateshpura, Kadugondanahalli or KG Halli, and Nagawara. The proposed corridor would connect with the Purple Line at MG Road and the Blue Line at Nagawara, while the Jayadeva interchange would connect it with the Yellow Line.
The officials described the corridor as a measure that would strengthen Bengaluru’s mass-transit network and reduce congestion on Bannerghatta Road. For commuters, however, passenger service on the first section will begin only after the required rolling-stock and safety clearances, followed by an officially announced inauguration date.
