West Bengal Battery Storage Plans Gain New Momentum

West Bengal is moving ahead with a major expansion of grid-scale battery storage, with two projects totalling 100 MW/400 MWh awarded for Jeerat and Kharagpur. The developments form part of a wider state push to add large-duration storage to its electricity network, a shift that could improve peak-demand management while making it easier to absorb more variable renewable power.

The projects have been awarded through competitive bidding conducted for the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL). They will operate under a 15-year Build-Own-Operate model, placing responsibility for developing and running the storage assets with the selected developer rather than requiring the utility to own the installations directly.For West Bengal, the significance extends beyond the reported investment value. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can charge electricity when demand or prices are lower and discharge it when the grid requires additional supply. That flexibility becomes increasingly important as electricity systems accommodate more solar and wind generation, whose output varies with weather and time of day.The two locations also sit within a broader storage procurement programme. Earlier tender documents from the state outlined 500 MW/2,000 MWh of standalone BESS across Durgapur, Kharagpur, Hooghly-Arambag and Jeerat. Each of the latter three locations was identified for 100 MW/400 MWh, while Durgapur was allocated 200 MW/800 MWh.

The four-hour storage configuration is particularly relevant to urban and industrial electricity demand. Instead of relying solely on additional generation capacity to meet short periods of peak demand, utilities can use stored electricity to smooth demand spikes and strengthen system flexibility. That can become valuable for cities where commercial activity, cooling loads and transport electrification increasingly place pressure on distribution networks.The scale-up also indicates that West Bengal battery storage is becoming part of the state’s infrastructure planning rather than remaining a niche clean-energy technology. Separate Power Grid Corporation tenders have sought development and EPC capabilities for additional 100 MW/400 MWh storage facilities, including Kharagpur, demonstrating the wider build-out underway across the state.For citizens, however, the eventual value of West Bengal battery storage will depend on how efficiently these assets translate into a more reliable electricity supply and better renewable-energy utilisation. The next challenge is therefore not simply adding megawatts of batteries, but integrating them into the grid without creating unnecessary land, material, safety or end-of-life burdens.

As storage deployment accelerates, transparent procurement, responsible siting, recycling arrangements and measurable improvements in grid performance will determine whether the investment delivers durable infrastructure value for West Bengal.
