Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation has planned 128 artificial lakes across the city’s nine administrative wards for this year’s Ganeshotsav, expanding facilities for environmentally safer idol immersion. The civic body has also planned 18 mobile immersion tanks, along with arrangements for idol transport, lighting, security and public amenities.
The municipal administration’s preparations follow the response to artificial lakes last year, when 79 percent of the city’s total idol immersions reportedly took place at these facilities. The civic body has been promoting environmentally friendly immersion arrangements in Vasai-Virar for the past two to three years.
The 18 mobile tanks will be provided at a rate of two per ward. Municipal authorities have also arranged special vehicles to transport idols immersed in artificial lakes for secure final immersion at the sites of closed stone quarries.
For larger Ganesh idols, facilities have been planned at immersion points including Marambalpada, Killa Bandar, Naigaon, Pachubandar, Naringi, Versova Creek jetty and Paanju. Additional arrangements have been made at Madhuban and Valaip pada quarry sites, according to the report.
The civic body said immersion locations would include idol collection centres, medical assistance rooms, separate spaces for performing aarti, trained lifeguards, lighting and mandap structures. These arrangements are intended to support residents while reducing pressure on natural water bodies during the festival.
The municipal administration’s preparations cover artificial immersion lakes, mobile tanks, designated jetties, quarry sites and associated safety facilities across the city’s nine wards.
