The much-anticipated Vande Bharat Express is slated to commence operations on the Katra-Sangaldan railway line, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity and promoting tourism in the region.
This development comes after a comprehensive security audit of the railway track, ensuring the safety and preparedness of the route ahead of the train’s launch. The Katra-Sangaldan line, part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, has undergone rigorous assessments to address potential vulnerabilities. Following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack in April, additional security measures have been implemented, including the deployment of extra forces at critical points along the track. The security of tunnels and bridges, notably the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and India’s first cable-stayed bridge over Anji Khad, has been deemed adequate, with continuous CCTV surveillance and 24/7 patrolling.
The Vande Bharat Express, known for its high-speed capabilities and modern amenities, is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Katra and Sangaldan. Initial trials, including those involving military personnel, have been successful, indicating the route’s readiness for passenger services. The train’s operations are anticipated to commence from Katra to Baramulla, with plans to extend to Jammu after the completion of expansion works at Jammu Railway Station, including the addition of more platforms. The USBRL project, with an investment of approximately ₹41,000 crore, aims to provide seamless rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley, fostering economic growth and facilitating easier access to the region’s cultural and natural attractions. The successful integration of the Katra-Sangaldan line into the broader rail network underscores the commitment to enhancing infrastructure and promoting regional development.
