Hyderabad: Rail connectivity between Hyderabad and Kerala is set for a seasonal boost as additional special trains have been scheduled to manage the expected Onam travel rush. The services are aimed at giving passengers more options during the peak festival period, when demand typically rises among workers, students and families travelling between southern cities.
The special services form part of a wider plan involving multiple railway zones, with operations scheduled across the August–September festival period. The additional capacity is intended to ease pressure on regular trains and provide alternatives for passengers facing limited availability during the peak travel window. Among the services particularly relevant to Hyderabad are special trains connecting the city with Kollam and Mangaluru. A Hyderabad–Kollam service is scheduled to operate on Saturdays between August 15 and September 5, while the return service will run on Mondays from August 17 to September 7. Another special service will connect Hyderabad with Mangaluru Central on Wednesdays from August 19 to September 2, with the return journey scheduled on Thursdays through September 3. These routes provide connections to several important railway centres across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.
The expanded timetable also includes services originating from Charlapalli, Hyderabad’s eastern railway terminal, to Kollam. These trains are scheduled on Fridays from August 14 to September 4, with return services operating on Saturdays until September 5. The additional trains could be particularly useful for passengers travelling long distances during the festival period, when road and air transport can also experience increased demand. Rail-based travel provides a comparatively accessible option for households seeking to manage the cost of seasonal journeys. From an urban mobility perspective, seasonal rail capacity also helps absorb temporary increases in inter-city travel without placing equivalent pressure on highways. Better coordination between railway zones can make festival travel more predictable while supporting movement between major employment and residential centres.
Passengers should nevertheless check the latest timetable, stoppages, reservation availability and operating dates before planning their journeys, as special services can be subject to operational changes. With Onam approaching, the expanded rail schedule offers Hyderabad-based passengers additional choices for travelling to Kerala and other southern destinations.
