Vadhavan Port Highway to Boost Maharashtras Trade

India’s infrastructure, the 95th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG) under the PM GatiShakti initiative convened on Thursday, 13 June 2025. Chaired by Pankaj Kumar, Joint Secretary at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the meeting focused on evaluating key projects aimed at improving multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency across the nation.

Among the notable projects reviewed was the extension of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-2A. The proposed 6.032 km extension aims to provide direct connectivity to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport from Koteshwar Metro Station. This strategic development is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility by offering faster, more convenient access to the airport for daily commuters and residents across the city. The project aligns with Ahmedabad’s vision to integrate sustainable and efficient public transport solutions. Another major initiative discussed was the construction of an eight-lane access-controlled highway along NH-248S to improve connectivity to the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra. This infrastructure project is poised to ensure efficient cargo evacuation and support the port’s development as a major global trade hub. The dedicated road will directly connect the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway and NH-48, significantly enhancing logistics efficiency and reinforcing Vadhavan Port’s role as a strategic gateway for international trade.

The NPG also reviewed the development of Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) in Hyderabad and Patna. The proposed MMLP in Hyderabad, located at Parkibanda village in Medak district, is planned to span 315 acres and is projected to handle 1.47 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo annually by 2028, with capacity expected to scale up to 19.98 MMT by 2070. Similarly, the proposed MMLP in Patna, located in Fatuah Taluka, is projected to handle 5.43 MMT of cargo annually by 2071. These logistics parks are expected to transform freight logistics in their respective regions by facilitating seamless cargo movement, improving connectivity, and promoting economic growth. Additionally, the meeting focused on urban mobility solutions, with the proposal for an elevated corridor in Jodhpur city extending from Mahamandir to Akhaliya Chouraha. The 7.633 km corridor, aligned along NH-62 and NH-125, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility across one of Rajasthan’s busiest city corridors. The proposed structure is expected to reduce travel time by approximately 20 minutes during peak hours, benefiting daily commuters and residents.

These projects are part of the government’s broader vision to enhance infrastructure and connectivity across the country, aligning with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan’s objectives of integrated multimodal infrastructure, last-mile connectivity, and intermodal coordination. The NPG’s review underscores the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth, improving logistics efficiency, and enhancing the quality of life for citizens through sustainable and inclusive infrastructure development.

As these projects move forward, they are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s infrastructure landscape, driving economic progress, and positioning the nation as a global leader in logistics and connectivity.
