The Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation will lay the foundation stone for a new Uppal bus terminal on October 24, with the Rs 3.20-crore facility planned to separate bus operations from the congested Uppal X Roads junction in Hyderabad.
The foundation ceremony will be held at the Zonal Workshop in Uppal, according to an official press release cited by Telangana Today. The proposed terminal is intended to address traffic bottlenecks and improve the movement of commuters in and around the junction.
Uppal X Roads currently experiences heavy congestion because district and city bus services halt at the same junction, the release said. The simultaneous stopping of buses brings different service operations into a busy urban intersection, affecting traffic flow and commuter movement.
The new terminal will include designated bus bays and heavy-duty concrete driveways. It will also have public toilet blocks and portable passenger shelters for commuters waiting to board buses. The infrastructure is being planned as a dedicated location for bus stopping and passenger handling instead of allowing services to halt together at the road junction.
The project cost has been estimated at Rs 3.20 crore. The information released so far does not specify the terminal’s construction timeline, the number of bus bays, the agencies that will operate the facility or whether traffic diversions will be required during construction.
The intervention comes as Uppal functions as a significant bus movement point where city and district services converge. By providing separate bays, driveways and passenger facilities, the proposed terminal is expected to organise bus operations at the location. Its effectiveness will depend on how services are shifted to the facility and how access is managed between the terminal and the surrounding roads.
The foundation stone-laying on October 24 is the next stated milestone for the project. Further details on implementation and operations are expected from the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation as construction progresses.
