Unsafe Roads and Missing Lights Endanger Commuters

Commuting late at night across the city has become a hazardous ordeal for many, with poorly maintained roads and inadequate street lighting transforming a routine journey into a perilous adventure. Recent heavy rains have exacerbated the situation, leaving roads riddled with water-filled craters and treacherous potholes, while the absence of streetlights further compounds the risk for two-wheeler riders and drivers alike.

Residents across various city zones, including MP Nagar Zone II, Gulmohar, Arera Colony, 1100 Quarters, Bittan Market, and Shivaji Nagar, have reported widespread issues with road safety. “Except for a few areas, the lack of street lighting is alarming. I’ve encountered numerous potholes and craters, especially after the recent rains,” said a local trader. The heavy downpours have also scattered dust across the roads, making them slippery and increasing the risk of accidents, as riders struggle to maintain control of their vehicles. The perilous conditions are not limited to two-wheelers. Four-wheeler drivers are equally affected by the deteriorated road infrastructure. An Indian actor shared his recent experience, highlighting the stark contrast between the well-lit interiors of Rani Kamlapati railway station and the pitch-black roads outside. He recounted a close call with an SUV and the sudden appearance of a truck on a poorly illuminated road, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures.

The ongoing issues reflect a broader problem with urban road maintenance and safety. The city’s infrastructure has struggled to cope with the dual challenges of heavy rainfall and insufficient lighting, creating a hazardous environment for all road users. BMC Commissioner Harendra Narayan was unavailable for comment on these pressing concerns. The current state of the city’s roads poses significant risks to commuters, both on two-wheelers and in cars. The urgent need for enhanced road maintenance and better street lighting is evident to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
