Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has initiated a rigorous crackdown on illegal hoardings following a tragic incident in Ghatkopar where an unauthorised hoarding collapse claimed lives. In response, TMC authorities have taken decisive action, demolishing 14 unauthorised hoardings in Thane city and removing metal sheets from hoardings that exceed permissible sizes.
With a total of 294 hoardings across the city, TMC officials have intensified scrutiny to ensure hoarding stability and adherence to size regulations. However, 14 hoardings were found to lack the necessary permissions and were promptly demolished. TMC clarifies that authorities such as the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC) hold the mandate to grant permissions for hoarding installations.
The permissible size for hoardings stands at 40×40 feet, with TMC officials identifying 32 hoardings that fail to meet this standard. Owners of these non-compliant hoardings have been directed to either resize them accordingly or face demolition. Until compliance is met, advertisements on these structures remain prohibited.
In terms of permissions, data provided by TMC reveals that MSRDC has granted permits for six hoardings, with stability certificates duly obtained. Similarly, the Central Railways sanctioned one hoarding, accompanied by a stability certificate. These agencies are authorised to grant permissions, ensuring structural integrity and adherence to regulations.
However, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) operates independently of TMC jurisdiction, placing four hoardings on its land. While not obligated to provide stability certificates, MSRTC is conducting structural audits to assess hoarding stability and ensure public safety.
Overall, TMC’s crackdown underscores the imperative of regulatory compliance and public safety in outdoor advertising practices. By enforcing size regulations and scrutinising permissions, TMC aims to mitigate risks associated with unauthorised hoarding installations, fostering safer urban environments for residents and commuters alike.
