Telangana is likely to receive widespread rain over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places across several districts from Wednesday as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal strengthens.
The IMD-Hyderabad said the low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea is expected to intensify into a depression on Monday and a deep depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal on Tuesday. The system is likely to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast around September 23.
The weather department has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places in Telangana on Monday and at most places from Tuesday to Friday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are also likely in parts of the state.
A yellow warning for heavy rainfall at isolated places has been issued for Monday and Tuesday in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Mahbubnagar and Nagarkurnool. The warning is expected to intensify from Wednesday.
An orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for isolated places on Wednesday in Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahbubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda and Jangaon. A similar orange warning is in place for Thursday for several northern and eastern districts, including Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanumakonda.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Telangana on Friday, along with squally winds of 50–60 kmph at isolated places. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue at isolated places on Saturday.
Rainfall data recorded by the Telangana Development Planning Society between 8.30 am and 8 pm on September 20 showed the highest recorded precipitation at Chinthakunta in Kothapalle mandal of Karimnagar district, at 76 mm. Narayanpet in Siddipet district recorded 58 mm, Jukkal in Kamareddy district 55 mm and Jaggasagar in Jagtial district 53.5 mm.
Monitored locations in Kumuram Bheem, Nirmal, Rangareddy, Adilabad and Nizamabad recorded rainfall ranging from 52.3 mm to below 20 mm. Nagarkurnool also recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Sunday.
For Hyderabad, the forecast for the next 48 hours is generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thundershowers, including occasional intense spells. Gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are likely, while the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain around 31°C and 25°C.
The district-level warnings will remain in force through Saturday, with the most severe forecast conditions currently expected across northern and eastern Telangana on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
