Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Nilgiris Faces Heavy Rain Risk on November 2

Tamil Nadu is likely to see light to moderate rain in several districts over the coming days, while the Nilgiris may receive heavy rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds on November 2, according to a forecast issued by the Chennai Meteorological Centre.

The weather system driving the change was a low-pressure area over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining regions on October 29. The system remained over the same area on October 30 and is expected to strengthen into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea on October 31.

The system is forecast to move west-northwest towards the Andhra Pradesh coast over the following two days. The meteorological centre said the Western Ghats districts and southern coastal Tamil Nadu could receive light rain at isolated locations on October 30 and October 31.

On November 1, isolated parts of the northern coastal districts, Western Ghats districts, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, Salem, Erode and Karur may receive light to moderate rain. The rain could be accompanied by thunder and strong winds, the forecast said.

The Nilgiris is expected to be the main area of concern on November 2, when isolated locations in the district may receive heavy rain with thunder and strong winds. Other parts of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, may experience light to moderate rain at isolated locations, also accompanied by thunder and strong winds.

The forecast places the Nilgiris and other Western Ghats districts among the areas requiring closer attention as the system moves towards the Andhra coast. The weather office’s district-level outlook covers both inland and coastal regions, indicating that rainfall conditions may vary across Tamil Nadu during the forecast period.

The Chennai Meteorological Centre has not announced any further operational measures in the supplied forecast. The next developments will depend on the low-pressure system’s expected strengthening on October 31 and its subsequent movement towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.
