Tamil Nadu’s power board plans to purchase 1,500 megawatts of electricity every day from March 1, 2027, as the state prepares for higher demand linked to intensifying heat, according to a report by Dinamalar. The proposed procurement will require approval from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Tamil Nadu’s average daily electricity demand is currently estimated at between 20,000 MW and 21,000 MW, the report said. The power board expects demand to rise above usual levels in the coming years as hotter conditions increase electricity consumption across the state.
The proposed 1,500 MW purchase represents a significant addition to the electricity available for meeting the state’s daily requirement. However, the report does not specify whether the power will be procured through short-term contracts, longer-term agreements, market purchases or another arrangement.
The planned start date is March 1, 2027. Before the procurement can proceed, the power board has sought permission from the electricity regulator. The regulatory process will determine whether the proposed purchase is approved and under what terms.
The announcement places electricity planning alongside the growing pressure created by higher temperatures. During hotter periods, demand can increase as households, businesses and institutions use more cooling equipment. For a state whose average daily requirement is already between 20,000 MW and 21,000 MW, even a relatively limited increase can require additional procurement or generation capacity.
The reported decision is therefore focused on securing supply in anticipation of future demand rather than responding to a power shortage identified in the report. Dinamalar did not provide details of any current supply deficit, planned generating stations, expected procurement cost or the source from which the additional 1,500 MW would be purchased.
The regulatory approval will be the next formal step. Until permission is granted, the proposed daily procurement from March 2027 remains a plan rather than an operational arrangement. Details on the purchase price, contract duration, supplier selection and how the additional power will be integrated into Tamil Nadu’s electricity system have not been stated in the available report.
