Tamil Nadu Power Procurement Plan Adds 1,500 MW From 2027

Tamil Nadu’s Electricity Board has decided to purchase 1,500 megawatts of electricity every day from March 1, 2027, as the state prepares for higher power demand during increasingly severe summers, according to a report by Dinamalar.

The proposed procurement is intended to supplement the state’s electricity availability as daily demand is currently averaging between 20,000 MW and 21,000 MW. The report said demand is expected to rise in the coming years because of a projected increase in the intensity of summer heat.

The Electricity Board has sought approval for the purchase from the state’s electricity regulatory commission. The procurement can proceed only after the regulatory process is completed, according to the report.

The decision places additional electricity procurement within Tamil Nadu’s wider challenge of matching seasonal demand with dependable supply. Summer demand can increase pressure on generation and distribution systems, particularly when households and businesses require more power for cooling. The report, however, does not provide details of the proposed supplier, procurement price, contract duration or the source from which the additional electricity would be obtained.

The 1,500 MW daily requirement represents a substantial addition to the state’s planned supply position when compared with average demand of 20,000 MW to 21,000 MW. The report does not specify whether the electricity will be procured through a long-term agreement, short-term purchases, or another arrangement. It also does not state whether the planned purchase is linked to a specific generation project.

The regulatory approval request will therefore be the next formal step in the proposal. The commission’s decision would determine whether the Electricity Board can proceed with the planned purchase from March 1, 2027, and under what conditions.

For electricity consumers, the stated objective is to prepare for demand growth before the summer pressure becomes more acute. The report does not announce any changes to tariffs, supply schedules or consumer connection rules. It also does not provide a forecast for the state’s total demand in 2027.

Tamil Nadu’s current average daily demand of 20,000 MW to 21,000 MW provides the immediate basis for the procurement decision. The projected increase in heat intensity is the stated reason for planning additional supply in advance. Further details will depend on the regulatory commission’s review and any subsequent procurement announcement by the Electricity Board.
