NTPC Co-Generation Projects Open 26% Equity Window for Industry

NTPC has invited commercial and industrial entities to take a 26 per cent equity stake in proposed co-generation projects that would supply steam and electricity, while also exploring integrated power arrangements using coal, renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The power utility said the Expression of Interest (EoI) is intended to identify opportunities for developing co-generation facilities tailored to the energy requirements of industrial users. The initiative is aimed at companies seeking long-term power supply arrangements that combine reliability, cost optimisation and sustainability.

Co-generation, also known as combined heat and power, produces electricity and useful heat or steam through an integrated system. For industrial users that require both forms of energy, the model can consolidate supply arrangements rather than treating electricity and process steam as entirely separate requirements. NTPC said the proposed projects would address the diverse needs of commercial and industrial entities.

The initiative comes as industrial users increasingly focus on energy security, operating costs and sustainability, according to the utility’s statement. The proposed arrangements are expected to combine NTPC’s power-generation capabilities with participation from the companies whose facilities require dedicated or integrated energy solutions.

NTPC said the projects may draw on a mix of coal, renewable energy and battery storage systems. The statement did not specify the locations, capacity, investment value, project-development schedule or eligibility conditions for individual facilities. Those details are expected to be established through the EoI process and subsequent project discussions.

The proposed equity structure would give participating commercial and industrial entities a direct stake in the co-generation projects, while NTPC would use its generation and project-development experience to support the arrangements. The utility described the initiative as part of its broader effort to expand its energy-solutions portfolio and strengthen partnerships with industrial users.

NTPC is India’s largest integrated power utility, with an installed capacity of more than 91 GW, according to the information released with the announcement. It has more than 35 GW under construction and has set a target of reaching 149 GW of total capacity by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy sources.

The company’s stated capacity plans include thermal, hydro, solar and wind generation. It has also entered areas including e-mobility, energy storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear power and green hydrogen. The co-generation EoI places industrial steam and electricity supply within that wider expansion of energy services.

NTPC’s announcement does not amount to a final project award or a confirmed investment commitment from participating companies. The immediate next step is the submission and evaluation of Expressions of Interest from eligible commercial and industrial entities, followed by the development of specific co-generation proposals.
