NTPC Opens 26% Equity Route for Industrial Co-Generation Projects

NTPC Limited has invited commercial and industrial entities to invest up to 26 per cent equity in proposed co-generation projects aimed at supplying industries with steam, electricity and integrated power solutions. The power utility said the initiative will explore long-term arrangements combining coal, renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems, or BESS.

The Expression of Interest is targeted at Commercial and Industrial entities that require reliable and economical energy for their operations. Under a co-generation model, steam and electricity are produced through an integrated facility, allowing industrial users to align power supply with their process-energy requirements.

NTPC said the proposed projects are intended to address the varied energy needs of industries while supporting energy efficiency and sustainability objectives. The company described the initiative as part of its effort to expand its energy solutions portfolio and build stronger partnerships with industrial consumers.

The proposed model would bring industrial users into the ownership structure through a 26 per cent equity participation. The statement did not specify the locations, project capacities, investment value, technology configuration or timelines for individual facilities. These details are expected to depend on responses to the EoI and subsequent project development decisions.

The initiative comes as industrial consumers seek greater control over energy security, operating costs and emissions-related performance. By combining steam generation with electricity supply, co-generation can serve industries where both forms of energy are required as part of daily production. NTPC said the proposed arrangements would provide reliable, economical and sustainable energy through long-term power supply solutions.

The energy mix outlined by NTPC includes coal, renewable energy and battery storage. The inclusion of BESS indicates that the proposed supply arrangements could incorporate storage alongside conventional and renewable generation, although the company has not disclosed how the technologies would be combined in specific projects.

NTPC is India’s largest integrated power utility, with an installed capacity of over 91 GW and more than 35 GW under construction, according to the statement. It has set a target of reaching 149 GW of total capacity by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy sources.

The company’s portfolio includes thermal, hydro, solar and wind power plants. It has also entered areas including e-mobility, energy storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear power and green hydrogen. The co-generation proposal extends that wider diversification strategy into direct, integrated energy solutions for industrial users.

The next step is for interested Commercial and Industrial entities to respond to NTPC’s Expression of Interest. Project-specific details, including capacity, location, ownership structure, technology mix and implementation schedules, will become clearer as the EoI process advances.
